Post interesting Starfy character origins here! : D
Starfy, Starly, Pufftop Guards, Pufftop Scholar, multiplayer stars - Mysterious creatures with traits of both starfishes and celestial stars.
Moe - Based on a clam. His Japanese name Kyorosuke may be based on the onomatopoeia kyorokyoro, which means to look around restlessly, combined with suke; a Japanese name suffix. In 2000 when Densetsu no Starfy was a Game Boy Color title, his name was originally Kyororon. I do not know what the ron might mean, but it does remind of the given name Ron shortened from Ronald derived from Old Norse. I personally have subjective feelings that his English name "Moe" gives a 'cool' vibe to it that fits his personality.
Choking - Choking is a crab with more inspirations that meet the eye. 貯金 ("Chokin") means 'piggy bank' or 'savings' and he has a coin purse that holds many pearls. Choki also means "snip", which is fitting for him because he has sharp pincers. Additionally, he releases large clouds of toxic gas that may cause choking.
Konk - Based on a sea snail. I didn't actually know this until Bonboon288 added it to the Starfy Wiki ^_^.
Ruby - Based on a zebra turkeyfish.
Ogura - Based on both a demon and an eel. Ogura is both a Japanese surname and similar to 小暗い (ogurai), meaning "dusky", "dim", "shady".
Wotsaruto - Fish musician. His/her name may be based on the popular musician Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Runosaru - A monkey who is an artist. Runosaru's name may be based on runowāru (ルノワール); romaji for the French artist Renoir.
Santo Nakku - His name is similar to Santa Claus, he appears to be a reindeer and wears a Santa based hat/clothes.
Resshi - May be based on the Loch Ness Monster, sometimes affectionately nicknamed "Nessie".
The Jellato Sisters - Believed to be based on sea angels.
Dejeel - ジール has an end sound like "eel" but Dejeel can interestingly be seen out of water too, closer to a snake. Messhi475 wondered if the way she can coil in her own mass makes her like a snake. She slivers like a snake at the end of the best ending of Starfy 4. She is depicted similar to some gorgons. Her name reminds me of King Delarin from the Nintendo video game title Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru. This made me wonder whether there is anything about the "de" beginning that makes it relevant to snakes or eels.
Mashtooth - Dragon with a face like a crocodile. This was an official reason that inspired his Japanese name, ダイール (Daīru), which sounds like "dile". His English name fits his cruel attitude, like mashing teeth.
Enemies:
Trappa - Its red spherical appearance with a mouth makes it similar to Pac-Man, but it has sharp teeth; unlike Pac-Man.
Woopal - Based on axolotl (marketed as wooper looper in Japan)
Winna - Based on a Japanese practice where sausages are cut into cute octopus shapes for children's lunchboxes. These may be called "tako weiner" (たこさんウィンナー). Like Winna, they may wear little 'headbands' made out of dried seaweed too. ^w^
