Yeah, most Americans hate Tingle. I love him! I know about the games, and that was the reason I mentioned him because Japan got them and we did not.

People think he is too weird here, but so do the characters in the games! I'm shocked Kirby does so well since people are starting to turn against cute stuff. Then again, Kirby always frowns on our covers and look hardcore.

The too japanese thing always bugged me tbh. While the series had some japanese references it never felt too japanese for me I found it on a yourube comment out of all things so I cant say for certain where it orginated from Yes. I agree. The games while having some Japanese references never felt 'too Japanese' for me either. They were fun and accessible, easy to get into as well. Oh OK. No problem buddy. Too Japanese is a horrible excuse for anything, really. We have anime, manga, and Pokemon among other Japanese games like Siren, which uses an all Japanese cast. Yes. Many people outside of Japan love Japanese style things. I'm shocked Kirby does so well since people are starting to turn against cute stuff. Then again, Kirby always frowns on our covers and look hardcore. I like "cute" better than "hardcore". I appreciate both, but I personally don't really like that Nintendo made Kirby look more "hardcore" just for overseas release. I feel it may hurt part of the original charm, Kirby is cute and often looks innocent, it doesn't make him any less "cool" or heroic.

I prefer the innocent Kirby. I hate that he has to frown and look hardcore to appeal to our gamers. Basically, Kirby has to be something he is not in Nintendo's mind. Fortunately, most Kirby fans I know love the cute Kirby and I am sure people who buy his games do so because they know the real Kirby as opposed to what is portrayed on the cover.

Kirby is also child-like and innocent. He always trusts people.

Also, NoE should of localized the first 4 games when NoA didn't. They localized Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland for crying out loud, so I don't see why they couldn't localize the Starfy series, but instead we got ZERO of the games! We didn't even get a single one, while America at least got The Legendary Starfy!

Spot on, Leslielaperm. I agree completely and you listed some great examples of games that we have.
Etrian Odyssey also fits into this category and we got it here, along with Monster Hunter and lots of other games. I thought that the 3DS really helped Nintendo branch out and reach new audiences so hopefully they will let Starfy loose some time on the system.

Something supporting the existence of plans to bring Stafy to US/PAL regions was the existence of that "Legend of Stafy" (not Starfy) poster in the GBA Mario and Luigi game. Usually NoA would edit out mentions of Japan-only games or try to obscure them (just like how they tried with Stafy's cameo in Super Princess Peach, also by TOSE, to rewrite him as a random enemy - in the Kirby games there were tons of references to visual novels on the Famicom by Nintendo like Sayuki, etc and they were entirely replaced) but they didn't.
As for the rumor that Stafy GBA games were supposed to get US releases, it's plausible. We have confirmed reports that NoA planned tons of GBA localizations including Mother 1+2, Ao no Tengai, Kururin Paradise, Bit Generations (under the name " Digitylish"), Custom Robo GBA... but ALL of them were unceremoniously cancelled due to two factors: a) the success of the DS b) NoA tried a campaign to please fans by localizing Tales of Phantasia (sadly a bad port) and Magical Starsign, but they bombed and didn't sell and and thus this initiative that would bring more GBA games (including Mother 3) was cancelled altogether. There's also maybe a bit of mismanagement too. Some games slipped under the cracks like Hamtaro 4 courtesy of NoE, but it seems they too were beaten into submission. If only Working Designs weren't so dumb to pass on the GBA they might have survived SCEA denying them all releases out of spite, and we might have seen these games.
Also, the awful gaming press that emerged in the late-2000 loved to hate on Nintendo. That Tingle RPG was actually supposed to get an US release (that's how it got localized to Europe in the first place, sadly NoE wasn't independent enough back then) but IGN ran a poll how much people would hate a Tingle RPG to be released. And guess what, Nintendo did that one time listen to whiny forum dwellers - they also jettisoned a Tingle cameo in Twilight Princess (the NPC model is still used, modified and with another dialogue). And because of this, neither NoA or NoE released the second Tingle RPG.
I'm actually sort of glad Nintendo doesn't listen as much to forum dwellers these days.

There is a fan-translation in progress for the second Tingle RPG, though, and it looks like we may be getting some for first 4 Starfy games in the future. NoA and NoE should localize the first 3 Starfy games on the English Wii U VCs if they are releasing them on the Japanese one, though. Maybe a collection of the first 3 games (Since they do take place after each other)? NoA messed up by only localizing The Legendary Starfy (And NoE messed up even more by not releasing ANY of the games in Europe), generally considered to be the weakest game in the franchise and it also sold the least of the series in Japan. The Legendary Starfy did get good reviews in America and was generally well-liked by the people who played it, though, but sold poorly there when it was first released.

One reason that might explain why NoE didn't publish Stafy 5 would be that they are known to pass on releasing English-only stuff as opposed to the 5 EIFGS languages, and Stafy 5 has lots of its text as videos. Rebuilding the game to store 5 sets of videos might have been too much considering the cartridge space. But so was the case with all Layton games after the second one, where to solve this problem each language got a separate version. But that would be a commercial risk (Nintendo only begun releasing them separately with the second game, after the first one's success).
There's the nasty fact that NoE had no independence or power back then to push for such a release if it wasn't already planned, and when games would bomb in one region their release would be cancelled for all other regions. And NoA didn't want to cooperate with NoE much if at all back then (save for the Donkey Kong Returns game because their French/Spanish translations for the US release were behind schedule)
Also, I doubt Nintendo would spend money on reverse engineering GBA games for entire translations at this point. At the very best, if hell froze over and they did decide to bring them to VC, they would be likely untranslated. Only similar cases I can recall would be: - Monster World 4: that one was by M2 (who incidentally made the Megadrive and GBA emulators for the Wii U VC) - Shin Megamo Tensei 1: Atlus did go through the effort of retranslating a GBA game, but they used an iOS port to do so. They were probably too scared to reverse-engineer the GBA code. - Earthbound Beginnings (Mother 1): but the finished translated prototype existed since way back from 1991. When they released it, they didn't even touch the graphics to update the title.
Bear in mind NoA does reverse-engineer code for its VC games, but they only edit text/graphics the bare minimum, just to remove text that would cause copyright problems. When even the 60Hz region flag isn't hacked in their PAL releases, why would we expect them to do the needed much more colossal hacks for a translation from scratch from a Japanese version?
Is Stafy 5 the "weakest" game though? That's a subjective claim. Everything was improved for it, graphics/gameplay costumes/level design, you name it... save for no playable Stapy (besides a shoddy 2P mode and a few very easy levels), very few clothes in the pause menu, less returning characters, and a weaker post-game campaign.

The story is not as good as the first 4 games too, it's the second-shortest Starfy game (Only the first game is shorter), and most notably the boss battles are a HUGE downgrade from the previous games (The boss designs in The Legendary Starfy are very bland and generic compared to the other 4 Starfy games, Ronk, Papes and Snips are recycled too often as bosses (While none of the bosses were recycled in the other 4 games, and even though you fight Konk every game and Ogura in the first 3 games, their attacks are different in each game. You also fight Bankirosu from Starfy 1 again in Starfy 3, but the way to defeat him in 3 is completely different from 1), only have one attack each and feel very out of place (I know they were done by a different artist, but they are way too humanoid), most of the bosses in The Legendary Starfy don't use any new attacks or get more difficult when their health gets low, unlike the bosses in the other games who got more attacks and became faster and harder to damage as they get lower on health, and the bosses are vulnerable for much longer than in the other 4 games. Mashtooth is also way too easy compared to the other final bosses of the series, the only hard part being that button mashing sequence with the Moon. Also, when you refought bosses in the previous games after completing them once they were tougher than when you first fought them, while in The Legendary Starfy they stay the same difficulty as they were when you first fought them). It is also the easiest game in the series.

It is pretty silly for Nintendo to not consider localizing a game because it is too Japanese considering Nintendo has released games that had Japanese references as well as approved games like MUSCLE MARCH for translation. Besides, Nintendo can always censor any of those Japanese elements out anyways like they did with the food for Kirby Super Star. >_>
